Modbus RTU/TCP Gateways Compared: Moxa MGate, Advantech EKI and USR-TCP232-410S

The most common gateway in energy monitoring and machine data projects connects RS-485 Modbus RTU devices to a Modbus TCP network. We compare three popular families from their published documentation.

Meters, drives and sensors often have only an RS-485 port, while software and PLCs live on Ethernet. A Modbus gateway sits between them: it acts as a Modbus master on the serial side and answers Modbus TCP requests on the network side. This article compares three families you will meet in quotations. It is not a hands-on test, and specifications below come from each maker's public pages.

The Contenders

Three Families

Each serves the same basic job at a different level of ruggedness, security and price.

Moxa MGate MB3000 family

1-, 2- or 4-port Modbus RTU/ASCII to Modbus TCP gateways, in standard and advanced lines.

  • Standard MB3180/3280/3480: metal IP30 housing, 12–48 VDC, up to 16 TCP masters.
  • Advanced -G2 models: up to 32 TCP clients, IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 requirements, redundant power inputs.
  • The older MB3170/3270 carries a “not recommended for new design” badge on Moxa's page, with a discontinuance notice dated 30 Sep 2026.

Advantech EKI-1221

A 1-port Modbus gateway from the EKI-1200 family (2- and 4-port siblings exist).

  • RS-232/422/485 on a DB9 plus two Ethernet ports for LAN redundancy.
  • Up to 16 connections in client mode and 32 sessions in server mode per serial port.
  • Agent mode for the fastest response; CI models add 2 kV isolation and wide temperature range.
  • DIN-rail or wall mounting, 12–48 VDC dual inputs.

USR IoT USR-TCP232-410S

A compact, low-cost serial-to-Ethernet module with a Modbus gateway function.

  • RS-232 and RS-485 ports that can work at the same time, plus one Ethernet port.
  • Modbus RTU/TCP conversion with multi-host polling, up to 16 hosts.
  • Listed for −40 to 85 °C, wall mounting, MQTT with SSL for cloud use.
  • The vendor's page states both 5–36 V and 9–36 V for the supply, so confirm the range before wiring.

Read the fine print Within one family, features differ by model. For example, in Moxa's standard series only the MB3280 and MB3480 include a built-in 120 Ω RS-485 terminator and HTTPS; the MB3180 does not. Always match the exact model number.
How to Choose

Five Questions Before You Buy

The best gateway is the one that fits the site, not the longest spec list.

This is a desk-based comparison using the manufacturers' public documentation, read in October 2026. We did not bench-test these units for this article. Specifications, firmware and model status change, and even a manufacturer's own pages can disagree — always confirm in the current datasheet before you specify or buy. Brand and product names belong to their owners; mention here is not an endorsement.
